A Place For Us was founded in 1984. Founders, Steve and Ruth Bryant White, started A Place For Us as a result of Steve's Minister refusing to marry them, as well as one of Steve's friends giving him a list of reasons for Steve not to marry Ruth (the first being that she's black).
Ruth's minister performed the marriage in 1980, and a year later they shared their experience with over 2,000 people. Since then the Whites have reached millions; speaking at schools, colleges, national and local radio and television as well as print media. Following their first engagement others started sharing their stories with the Whites. Ruth and Steve found that there were others in society that had similar issues, but had no way to deal with their hurts and concerns.
The Whites became Certified Christian Counselors in 1984 and in 1988 they were ordained as ministers. This gave them the opportunity to marry interracial couples who were turned down by other ministers because of race.
Steve and Ruth have written two books about their experiences. "Free Indeed: The Autobiography of an Interracial Couple" and "Life Through The Eyes of An Interracial Couple: And Their Dreams of a Colorblind Americe".

A Place For Us National is designed to promote racial harmony. In doing so we support multiracial familes and their extended families confront the issues of the day head on.
